Jump in the air now, get wings on way down

Now that you’ve stuffed yourself with the Christmas bounty and drank your fill of your favourite tipple, it’s time to plan well for revival and renewal.

Annually, we all have great ideas which sprout from the ‘New Year, new you’ motto but why have so many of us ended up back where we started come the next Christmas.

What’s worked for me is a progressive plan that not only takes account of the next 12 months but the next three to five years.

Little changes in habits which promote good health and wellbeing over a prolonged period of time is the key to sustainable transformation as opposed to a grueling six weeks of crash dieting and crazy exercise routines.

So this New Year why not dispense with the theory of resolutions and stick with a well mapped out plan which is flexible, sustainable and will yield long term results. It is crucial that the plan is wholly tailored for you, your lifestyle, time constraints and overall goals be they in businesses, health, fitness, wellness or whatever.

There’s no better time than the present to set your plan in place. If you are taking a few days off to celebrate the festive season with family why not set yourself an overall goal, draw up a realistic strategy to attain that goal and simply go for it in a sustainable manner come January 1.

Waiting until the day you head back to work is often not good start as most people are already into the New Year by then – so be prepared to hit the ground running when the clock strikes 12.

In fact, there’s nothing to stop you getting started right away if you feel you’ve enjoyed quite enough of the Christmas spirit – I’m a firm believer that every new day brings a chance to start afresh.

And don’t let the enormity of your overall goal and the time required to reasonably achieve it put you off. Time will pass anyway – that is a sure thing. Why not plan to chip away at reaching your dream and in time you will make it a reality.

Four years ago my husband Seamus made a decision to take on the challenge of completing an honours degree in computer science.

The construction business was decimated and his carpentry firm in tatters but people still thought he was mad to start into third level education at 31 while trying to support a young family.

We applied the reasoning that the four years will pass anyway so why not embark upon the period with a plan and make good use of the time rather than waiting for something to simply 'turn up'.

Our thinking was to jump in the air and grow wings on the way back down and it worked. We chose not to think exactly how everything would pan out but to plan little changes and continue to build upon the successes achieved along the way.

Seamus graduated this year and is now working in a homegrown family business which we hadn’t even considered when he began his journey in third level education.

So as the festive cheer wanes in these days of Christmas limbo, don’t let the thought of the challenge of achieving your goals put you off planning well for 2017 and beyond.

Make a plan now - not just for 12 months but for whatever length of time you need to achieve your dreams.
